WOMEN’S GUILD
Although not quite at the 100-year mark, the Women’s Guild has been an integral part of St. Mary Armenian Church for nearly as long, proudly standing alongside the church’s significant anniversary throughout most of its history. Its longevity is a result of the steadfast dedication of generations of women who have passed through the doors of this church, creating a lasting legacy of service, faith, and commitment. St. Mary is truly blessed to have women who are always willing to step forward, lending their time and talents wherever and whenever there is a need.
The Women’s Guild began on March 19, 1928 when a group of devoted ladies gathered together at the home of Mrs. Takouhi Essayan. After a couple of organizational meetings and the creation of by-laws, an executive committee was formed. The officers of the first executive body of the Women’s Guild were: Mrs. Haiganoush Zotian-Chairlady, Mrs. Perouz Moroukian-Vice Chairlady, Mrs. Meroubeh Haigazian-Secretary, Mrs. Elise Sirabian-Assistant Secretary, Mrs. Takouhi Essayan-Treasurer, Mrs. Haiganoush Gulezian and Mrs. Lousarpi Bedigian-Advisors. Their mission has been and continues to be the support of the preservation and growth of our church, ensuring its upkeep and well-being.
The women of this organization have tirelessly worked both behind the scenes and front and center at countless church events—whether in the kitchen, sanctuary, or classrooms—and have made significant contributions to the church’s financial health. Their involvement touches every corner of our church and community life. They’ve been an inspiring force to all members of our congregation, reflecting the enduring spirit of Armenian women and our people as a whole.
The Women’s Guild currently fulfills its mission of worship by actively participating in the Divine Liturgy as both choir members and congregants, engaging in the service through prayer, song, worship, and sacraments. Another key opportunity for worship is Saintly Women’s Day, a special occasion that honors the women saints of the Armenian Church, allowing the women of our church to gather in prayer and celebrate our rich legacy of faithful women.
The Guild’s purposes of Witness and Service are carried out through participation in both Armenian and broader community activities, as well as by supporting the Sunday and Armenian Schools and assisting the Pastor. In the past, these efforts have included collecting clothing for Armenia and assembling gift baskets for the elderly in the surrounding community.
The Guild also prioritizes education and fellowship for its members. It has supported Cultural Day held annually in October, and recently hosted an Armenian Christmas Party, which helped deepen our members’ connection to our Armenian heritage and culture. Tricky Tray is another event that brings our community together, and it has been the major fund-raiser of this organization for many years.
As the Women’s Guild embarks on its 100-year anniversary, the women of the church will continue to be a vital force in sustaining and strengthening our parish through the practice and encouragement of faith, the nurturing of friendships, and the building of meaningful connections within the church and the Armenian and surrounding communities. The longevity of the Women’s Guild is a testament to its enduring mission and impact.
