Blessing of Water
The following day, the mystery of our Lord’s baptism in the River Jordan is commemorated in the ceremony of Jurorhnek, the Blessing of Water.
In ancient times, this rite was performed by a river or seashore, but it later moved inside church sanctuaries. During the ceremony, the cross is immersed in water, recalling Christ’s baptism in the Jordan. Holy Chrism (Muron)—blessed oil—is then poured into the water from a dove-shaped vessel, symbolizing the Holy Spirit descending as a dove and the voice of the Father proclaiming Jesus as His Son.
The Holy Chrism, prepared in Holy Etchmiadzin, is blessed by the Catholicos with the assistance of the bishops. Muron contains olive oil, balsam, and the essence of forty different flowers and herbs. At the conclusion of the ceremony, the faithful receive blessed water to drink, sharing in the life-giving mystery of Christ. Just as water sustains earthly life, drinking the blessed water reminds believers that participation in Christ’s saving acts is essential for eternal life.
